A bright and satirical postcard featuring James Gillray’s Frying Sprats and Toasting Muffins, 1791.
Along with an eagerness for gold went parsimony in private life, according to the
caricaturists. Here the Queen is a picture of concentration as she uses a ‘save-all’ to fry
sprats. Her patched purse bulges with guineas, while the King toasts muffins on the fire
on which a kettle is boiling.
