A6 Diana and Actaeon Sketchbook

£3.50

A beautifully designed A6 Sketchbook featuring ‘Study for Diana and Actaeon (Detail)’ Thomas Gainsborough c.1784.

This is the study for “”Diana and Actaeon,”” c. 1785-8, by Thomas Gainsborough. The painting is the only survivor of Gainsborough’s mythological paintings; it was inspired by Book III of Ovid’s “”Metamorphosis,”” where Actaeone (a hunter) stumbles upon Diana and her Nymphs in the act of bathing naked at a pool. Actaeon was soon punished by Diana as she splashed him with water, transforming him into a stag, where he was soon hunted to death by his own hounds.
