Angus Clifford Racey Helps (1913 – 1971), spent his childhood in Chalvey, Somerset and studied at the West of England College of Art. He found commercial success in the 1940s with his illustrated books originally written for his own children. The characters who populated his books, many published by the Medici Society, were familiar to generations of children while his charming illustrations were reproduced as postcards, prints and jigsaw puzzles. He endeavoured to place himself low to the ground when drawing, giving him the impression that the viewer was actually in the company of his cast of woodland creatures.
