Description

Philip de László was one of the most famous artists in the world when he moved to England in 1907. There, he took his place in the lineage of artists of the Grand Manner tradition including Van Dyck, Reynolds, Gainsborough and Lawrence. His portraits are distinctive for their fluid handling of paint and surety of technique coupled with acute powers of observation.

Demand for his portraits came from royalty and the aristocracy as well as celebrities from the world of arts, sciences and politics. In the artist’s own words “I am an artist of the world and paint history” and so he has, leaving us a glamourous and elegant capsule of a lost world.
