Description
A bright and satirical greetings card featuring James Gillray’s Contemplations upon a Coronet, 1797.
On 14 March 1797 the Countess of Derby died, leaving the Earl free to marry Elizabeth
Farren after a seventeen-year courtship. The coronet that Farren contemplates rests on a
cushion with the shape of Derby’s caricatured head. She made her final appearance at
Drury Lane on 8 April as Lady Teazle: having made a career specialising in refined
aristocratic ladies, she now became one.
