This book attempts to survey and analyse a substantial gathering of such objects, made by Gainsborough’s House Society over the last ten or more years, and track the development of perceptions of Gainsborough’s art over the two hundred and fifty years since he flourished – through the evidence of graphic and plastic forms, often on very humble objects, rather than through what professional critics and commentators have said about his work. Contemporary fiction and journalism are also very much part of the story.
