This greetings card features the painting ‘A Wooded Landscape’ by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) 1755.
‘A young farmhand, having taken two horses to rest in the shade of a large tree, turns to look back at his companions, two of whom are busily loading a cart with hay. Two villagers lean on a gate and watch the labourers, with a church tower and the roof of a house appearing through the trees in front of the village. This compositional devise, as well as the low horizon and pink glow of the evening sky, shows the influence of Dutch landscape painters on Gainsborough’s work in the 1750s as can be seen in Paulus Potter’s rural scene’ (Extract from ‘Gainsborough and the legacy of Landscape’ Masterpieces from Woburn Abbey Exhibition Catalogue (Page. 40)).
