Three workshops full of strategies and ideas for adding landscape to your prose or poetry

In this series of three writing workshops we will explore landscape as a relationship between ourselves, our environment and memory, and how that relationship might be portrayed in writing – be that fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Taking inspiration and example from landscape literature, art, music and science, we will try out strategies and techniques for opening our writing up to different avenues of exploration. And in doing so, perhaps, find a new way of experiencing our surroundings.

The three linked workshops constitute a whole course, but can also be booked as standalone sessions. There will be short writing exercises offered, but the sessions are meant as inspiration and will be of value to those simply interested in the ideas, as well as those looking for practical writing assistance.

(3) In Ruins’ – Memory and Time

This one-off workshop will examine landscape as the place we store memory and the great mediator between ourselves and the passage of time. We will discuss artists and writers, as well as traditions and lore, that use landscape as a way of dealing with time and keeping memory alive. And we’ll have a go at writing our own memories into the landscape through short texts.

About Justin

Justin Hopper is a writer whose work explores the intersection of landscape, memory and myth. His book The Old Weird Albion (Penned in the Margins) looks at the South Downs through a series of poetic essays; Obsolete Spells (Strange Attractor Press) reveals the work and life of occult landscape poet Victor B. Neuburg. His two albums on the Ghost Box Records label (Chanctonbury Rings with Sharron Kraus; The Path with Belbury Poly) combine spoken-word landscape writing with music. His podcast Uncanny Landscapes provides a forum for in-depth interviews with contemporary landscape practitioners from the arts and sciences. He has taught landscape writing at venues including Tate Britain, Essex Book Festival, the National Maritime Museum and more. Originally from Pittsburgh in the USA, Justin lives in East Anglia with his partner and son.
