Learning to Mokulito Print with Natasha Marshall
November 8 – November 9
November 8 – November 9
This course teaches you about and how to Mokulito print – meaning ‘Wood Lithography’ In Japanese. You will create your own two printing plates on day 1 and print with these on day 2.
Mokulito is a technique developed in Japan in the 1970’s by Osaka Schisi. You can also combine Mokulito with Woodcut by cutting into your board, so you get contrasting lines and textures. It is a beautiful printing technique so it will be a lively, energetic, creative and ambitious couple of days. This is not a precise medium, expect the unexpected.
Mokulito printing is a chemical process – oil/grease and water do not mix, greasy ink stays on the grease-drawn areas and is repelled from the non-image areas. An additional technique I have found, to enhance the wood grain, is to add watercolour just before printing, you may want to have a go at this yourself too!

It would be good to bring sketches or photographs of ideas you would like to draw onto your printing plate. We will provide all the materials you need for doing this, but coming with creative ideas could help with the success of your finished work at the end of the two days. The wood plates we are going to be working on are A4.
Search for Mokulito images to inspire you and give you some ideas of what you want to draw on your plates – I also have images of my own work on my website. Don’t forget to wear old clothes in case you get printing ink on anything!
