Face to Face with Juliet Lockhart

This three-day course is centred around the extraordinary life and works of Cedric Morris – artist, Plantsman and co-founder of the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. Over three workshops, using the portraits created by Cedric Morris as reference, you will be introduced to a range of textile techniques and processes to translate your ideas on to both paper and fabric.

This course is for anyone who is interested in extending their textile practice, suitable for all abilities. The ability to draw is not essential.

Workshop 1: Drawing – Experimental Drawing – Sunday 15 September

An introduction to a range of drawing exercises, exploring the potential of varied tools and techniques. Translating drawings onto fabric.

Workshop 2: Mark Making and Collage – Sunday 29 September

Exercises in mark making leading to experimentation using paper and collage and working with transfer dyes and cloth.

Workshop 3: Stencils – Sunday 13 October 

Exploration of a series of paper collage exercises, experimenting with text, and making stencils. Creating portraits onto cloth.

About Juliet

Juliet Lockhart is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and educator. She creates narratives about places and people and has worked on numerous extensive projects that explore portraiture through stitch. As a PhD candidate at the University of Suffolk, Juliet is currently engaged in practice led research aimed at translating the work of Suffolk born Mary Beale, seventeenth century painter and writer, into textiles. Juliet’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is held in both private and museum collections.
