Gainsborough’s House – Reviving an Artist’s Birthplace

This book documents in pictures Reviving An Artist’s Birthplace, the ambitious project to transform Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, into an international centre for Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) in the unique setting of the artist’s of the artist’s birthplace and childhood home. With support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the £10 million transformation is the most significant development in the history of Gainsborough’s House since it opened as a museum in 1961. It involved four years of renovation and reconfiguration of the Grade I-listed Georgian townhouse, alongside the construction of a new three storey building, to provide new spaces for exhibitions, displays and learning.

This book of photographs by Anne-Katrin Purkiss is the record of the journey.
