Introduction to Monotype with Sally Weatherill

Join us for a relaxed one day workshop that’s perfect for beginners and anyone eager to explore a freer, more spontaneous way of making art.

Monotype printmaking is a very immediate and intuitive process in which unique prints are produced by adding and/or subtracting ink from a plate which is then printed onto paper. In this course, two methods of the flexible and experimental medium of monotype printmaking will be introduced.

During this inspiring session you will:

• Experiment with textured papers and stencils to create beautifully layered prints.
• Explore the subtractive method – where an image is formed by removing ink from the plate.
• Print your work using a relief press for professional results.

Graphic, textural or painterly results can be achieved, depending on which monotype technique is used. Techniques can be combined; the possibilities are endless.

All materials will be included but feel free to bring along any textured papers or netting to use in conjunction with monoprinting.

About Sally

Sally Weatherill is an abstract artist whose work in paint and print invites viewers to reflect on themes of transience, memory, and the layered traces of time. Her pieces often explore the idea of the palimpsest — where marks, textures, and images build up, fade, and re-emerge, creating rich, complex surfaces that hint at what lies beneath.

Originally from the US, Sally studied art history and textile design before moving to the UK, where she established her studio on the Essex/Suffolk border. For over two decades, she enjoyed a successful career as a textile designer and weaver before returning to fine art to complete an MA at the City & Guilds of London Art School.

Sally now shares her passion for printmaking as a Print Fellow at City & Guilds and as a print technician at Gainsborough’s House. Her work reflects a deep love of process, material, and the quiet power of layered imagery.
